Our History

In 1921, California passed legislation that allowed for the creation of community college districts. The new legislation allowed Modesto Junior College to become the first-ever California community college district. In 1954 voters elected to expand  the Modesto Junior College district into the much larger Yosemite Community College District. The new district became, geographically, one of the largest in the state, covering nearly 4000 square miles. In 1968, Columbia College opened near the historic Columbia, California to serve residents in the eastern region of the district, stretching across the foothills and high into the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Our Service Area

YCCD serves a region stretching more than 100 miles across and covering more than 4000 square miles, including Tuolumne and Stanislaus Counties, and areas from San Joaquin, Merced, Calaveras, and Santa Clara County.
